Federico Peixoto is a Costa Rican filmmaker, video producer, DJ and event organizer. He was born in Berlin, Germany in 1978 and has been promoting hip hop culture in Costa Rica and Central America since the early 2000s. In the mid 1990s, Federico founded his “Producciones del Gafeto/Gafeto TV” film production company. Its first production “Ticostylo” was at the same time Costa Rica’s first documentary about Sk8. Producciones del Gafeto has published several short films, video reportages and documentaries about urban subcultures featuring international artists like Ephniko (Colombia), Rxnde Akozta (Cuba), Cali P (Barbados), MC SHH (Mexico), Kemo the Blaxican (USA), Asheru (USA), among others. Its latest production is the “Tlacuilos” documentary about graffiti art in Central America which has been screened all over Central America and in the USA.
Federico has co-organized events such as the Griot Collective Festival (2006-2007) and the “Buscando la Raiz” national graffiti convention (2008, 2010, 2016). Since 2009, he performs as DJ at national and international music festivals. He is the co-funder, host and DJ of “La Ofensiva” radio show in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Central America’s graffiti scene is still relatively young, but it has already produced some unique styles and artists. A new documentary follows its development over 20 years, from the very start to the present day.
